China pulls a Milli Vanilli

Lin Miaoke - Yang PeiyiChina has embarrassed themselves by pulling a Milli Vanilli stunt during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. Lin Miaoke, the cute Chinese girl with the golden voice that made our hearts melt, was miming to a recording by another girl, Yang Peiyi.

Yang Peiyi didn’t make it into the ceremony because she didn’t had the right image; she was not pretty enough and had uneven teeth. After the performance of the opening ceremony Lin Miaoke got flooded with commercial offers but she got outed as a fake.

Music chief Chen said:

“It was the image of our national music, our national culture. And especially since it accompanied the arrival of the national flag in the arena, this was an extremely serious matter. In the end the change resulted in “a perfect voice and perfect image, merged together”. “

But the signing was not the only thing that was manipulated. According to the The Beijing Times the 55-second, 29-sequence firework footprints exploding their way up Beijing’s central axis was “mostly an animated three-dimensional video that was made over a year. It was not actually live footage except the final stage” at the stadium itself.

Hey there. I thought this was complete bullshit. For a country that has so much “pride” in their athletes, why would they fabricate shit like this? Why not have the person with real talent up on the stage? On top of that, I read that they faked some of the firework show (for TV audiences) with computer generated graphics because they feared that their smoggy air wouldn’t allow for a good view. Bastards…

Actually, I think the real singer is adorable–very sweet!

  4. Yea, that was a low class move. All she needed was half the makeup that the 12 and 13 year old Chinese gymnasts were wearing to look 16…

  6. Co-sign on most of the above. That is teaching litte kids something quite sinister I think. Not cute enough to sing? What kind of sense does that make?

  7. Hey, just found your blog through Entrecard.

I know a lot of people think trading out the little girl was a low move. Personally I don’t care that much. They picked an adorable girl (who by many accounts probably didn’t know she wasn’t singing). And really, who are we to judge who live in the center of the world of fake pop stars and engineered success?

What message does this give kids? The same one we’ve been pumping out to them for about the last 10 years.

The fireworks… They “faked” a portion of them for TV because it would have been far too dangerous to have actually used a helicopter. Or at least that was their perception of the risk. It is a bit disappointing that they were fake… but wow! They looked amazing.

These events might be a bit shady, but lots of things are faked for us every day, and the fact that this was solely for entertainment doesn’t bother me a bit.
